Discover the legacy of Fatima Al-Fihri, a pioneering Muslim woman who founded the world’s oldest university that is still running today! Centered on themes of education, ethical leadership, and social responsibility, the unit highlights how Islam’s focus on knowledge and its values of excellence, charitable endowment, and pluralism shaped inclusive institutions.  

It’s designed with flexible, self-guided activities that educators can easily adapt for various learning experiences.

Le Royaume du Mali:
Mansa Musa et Tombouctou

Cette ressource présente aux élèves le Royaume du Mali, un empire musulman historique d’Afrique de l’Ouest, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur la ville de Tombouctou et Mansa Musa. Elle souligne le rôle de l’islam dans la formation du gouvernement, de l’économie et des institutions éducatives du Mali. Conçue pour être utilisée durant le Mois du patrimoine islamique, elle convient aussi bien aux écoles publiques qu’aux écoles islamiques. La ressource est organisée de manière à ce que toutes les activités puissent être réalisées de façon autonome, permettant aux éducateurs de choisir les sections spécifiques à faire compléter par les élèves. Les élèves exploreront comment des valeurs islamiques telles que ‘Ilm (connaissance), ‘Adl (justice), Ihsān (excellence) et Waqf/Sadaqah (dons caritatifs) ont contribué à bâtir le puissant Royaume du Mali.

Al-Andalus: A Legacy of Faith, Knowledge and Justice

This resource aims to introduce students to the flourishing civilization of Al-Andalus, with a focus on Córdoba as a case study of how Islamic principles shaped a society rooted in knowledge, justice, co-existence, and social responsibility. The resource can be used as a standalone ‘workshop’ in public and Islamic schools. Through its guided inquiry, reflection, and real-world application, students will examine Al-Andalus’s historical contributions and draw meaningful parallels to contemporary civic issues in Canada and beyond.

Ibn Khaldun:
Redefining Historiography

This kit introduces students to Ibn Khaldun who has been one of the most prominent sociologist, historiographer and scholars throughout time.   Students will learn about Ibn Khaldun’s influential theories on social cohesion, history, and societal cycles through an interdisciplinary lens aligned with social sciences such as anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. This dynamic educational kit provokes critical inquiry and application of social science methodologies to analyze societal rise and decline, fostering a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary social dynamics. Direct curriculum connections for Gr.11 and 12 are provided within the educator resources.
